Labour Department - Sandton

I recently went on Maternity leave and had to get all my paperwork ready to claim UIF. I had all my papers ready and the end of November 2008. I went on leave at the end of February 2009. I went to the labour department in Sandton in the beginning of February and they let me wait in the line and when we got to the front the guy told me that I can't submit my forms now I had to go on leave first and then bring in the forms again. I then waited until I went on leave and after the baby was born I went back and gave in my forms. They send me to another line and we waited in that line for over 2 hours in we were the 5th person in that line. They had one Indian guy that helped one customer and then another black lady took over from him. She spends like half an hour on one client. When we eventually got helped the guy took all my forms and told me I had to wait 6 - 8 weeks and then phone them to see if my form has been approved. I told them that I will be back at work by then. What is the use of claiming UIF whilst on maternity leave if you are only going to get it when you return to work? I now have to go back after the 8 weeks with a birth certificate of my baby and then only will they pay me out. They can't tell you that you can claim for UIF while on maternity leave but then you only receive it when you return to work. That is why South Africa is being called the second Zimbabwe. The government employs people that can't do the work and then they still take our money every month for what?
